SAINT NINA – EQUAL TO THE APOSTLES, THE ENLIGHTENER OF GEORGIA, PROTECTOR AND HEALER OF SICK (HISTORICAL, ECCLESIASTICAL AND ETHNOCULTURAL ASPECTS)
(Abstract)
Saint Nina, also known as Nino of Cappadocia, preached and spread the Christian faith in Georgia in the first decades of the 4th century. Thanks to her efforts, King Mirian and Queen Nona, the royal court, followed by nobles and commoners, were first converted to Christianity. The life and deeds of Saint Nina were described much later, with the main merit going to Bishop Leonti Mroveli. In addition to her missionary activity, Saint Nina contributed to the hierarchical institutionalization of the Orthodox Church in Georgia. Saint Nina is a protector and healer of sick. During her lifetime she healed people suffering from blindness and leprosy. She protected and healed mothers, returning their milk to feed their infants. Saint Nina is the protector of teachers because during her life she created many disciples whom she guided on the path of faith and charity.
