POLISH ITINERARIES OF NESTOR URECHE (II). THE ROKOSZ OF ZEBRZYDOWSKI 1606-1608 AND ITS IMPACT ON MOLDAVIA

(Abstract)

With the ascension of Ieremia Movilă to the princely throne, the Principality of Moldavia entered the sphere of interest of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. After Ieremia Movilă’s death, his brother, Simion Movilă, took the throne of Moldavia. At the time of his accession, the Zebrzydowski Rebellion broke out in Poland. King Sigismund III Vasa made great efforts to calm tensions and defeat the rebels. Ultimately, the rebellion also had a negative impact on Moldavia. The situation worsened further when, in the same year as the decisive battle between the royal camp and the rebels, Simion Movilă died in Moldavia. At that point, both Simion's sons and Ieremia's sons had claims to the throne. This led to a veritable civil war, in which the house of Ieremia Movilă, supported by the powerful Potocki and Wiśniowiecki clans, emerged victorious. Nestor Ureche, however, was on the side of the defeated.
