RESTORATION OF THE ICON OF „THE LAST SUPPER”, COMPONENT OF THE ICONOSTASIS OF „ST. NICHOLAS” CHURCH IN DOROHOI

(Abstract)

The „St. Nicholas” church in Dorohoi, Botoşani county, preserves an Eastern European Baroque iconostasis of Ruthenian design, periodically framed according to the inscription of 1795. The "Last Supper" icon is part of the feast register and presents the Eucharistic scene framed by a polychrome decorated frame, arranged on a painted background with a marbled effect and with inserts at the corners of carved and polychrome floral elements.

The conservation-restoration project of the iconostasis, started later after the rehabilitation of the church building, aimed at researching aspects related to the stylistics of the work of art, the execution technique, the degradation mechanisms and finally the practical methodology of the restoration treatments.

The methodology of the restoration interventions on the „Last Supper" icon involved a series of treatments carried out both at the level of the wooden support, the polychrome sculpted form and at the level of the pictorial layer. The conservation-restoration process of the piece began with emergency interventions to the eradication of active xylophagous attack, further encompassing cleaning, consolidation and hydrophobicization of the wooden support, cleaning and activation with reunification of the varnish film, grouting gaps and ending with aesthetic presentation interventions.
