DOCUMENTS CONCERNING THE HISTORY OF THE MAVROMOL MONASTERY IN GALAŢI
(17TH CENTURY – EARLY 19TH CENTURY)

(Abstract)

The Mavromol Monastery in Galaţi, founded by the rulers Gheorghe Duca and Constantin Duca, begun around 1669 and completed in 1702, benefits from a fairly extensive bibliography, which we aim to supplement by publishing a significant selection of documents identified in the National Archives of Iaşi and the Library of the Romanian Academy. The monastery was a metochion of the “Great Mavromour Monastery, located in the regions of Constantinople” and was later, on March 6, 1735, dedicated to the Metropolitan Church of Moldavia by Grigore Duca, the son of its founder, Voivode Constantin Duca.

The monastery remains a significant part of the history of Galaţi and Moldavia, recognized as an important cultural and educational center through its „Hellenic and Greek” school, established by a decree (hrisov) issued by Voivode Grigore III Alexandru Ghica on August 13, 1765. Classes began on April 23, 1766, and on May 29, 1803, the school was transformed into one “of the Hellenic and Moldavian language.” Despite the devastation it suffered during the so-called Phanariot century, the monastery managed to endure, and even though part of its archival heritage was lost, enough materials have been preserved to be made available to interested readers and knowledgeable researchers for further study.
